I was forwarded these copies of the following two letters by Mr Terry Monaghan in response to the recent debate over the compatibility of the BBC VIEW PRINTER DRIVER ROM:

To: Mr Nazir Jessa, Managing Director, Watford Electronics, Jessa House, 250 Lower High Street, Watford WD1 2AN

Dear Mr Jessa,

I am the owner of an Acorn Electron computer and in a recent Electron User Group newsletter was a letter from an Electron owner who said that he had been advised by someone in your company that your VIEW PRINTER DRIVER ROM was not suitable for the Electron.

I have recently purchased from you a Panasonic KX-P1624 printer and a VPD ROM and, after fitting them to my Electron, the VPD appears to be able to do all your advertisement says it will do.

I am therefore very disappointed that your company may be depriving Electron users of such a useful upgrade, and losing a group of potential customers. It is also an insult to the Electron's adaptability.

Please find enclosed copies of letters and information which I have just sent to the editor of the EUG newsletter which I hope will rectify the situation.

Please note that the standard Electron has to be upgraded to include an Acorn Plus 1 or a Pres AP1 and to have a Pres AP6 fitted inside either. Your PAL ROM for the VPD should be fitted to the AP6. It goes without saying that a disk drive and suitable printer will be needed, although a tape may be able to do the job, albeit rather slowly. I would not like to try. My machine also has a Master Ram Board from Slogger to give it 64K memory, and that may make a difference. How much memory does your VPD use? Viewstore worked, although very slowly, before I increased the memory.

If you feel like rewarding me for drawing the above to your attention and potentially increasing your customer base, I would love to be sent a complimentary VIEW 3.0 ROM and User Guide. I wonder what other products of yours would work on an expanded Electron, bearing in mind that ADFS 3.5" disks are probably more popular and certainly more practical.

Yours sincerely, Terry Monaghan.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your letter concerning the VPD ROM and Acorn Electron.

Although this company has never sold the Electron, nor has it ever held stock or produced an Electron hardware or software product, there are obviously some products in the existing BBC range which will be suitable for use on the Electron, with expansion or without.

However, our technical staff will have limited knowledge of the computer itself, having left product support and hard/software to others like Pres and Slogger, and will only be able to offer technical advice on compatibility from their own experience. If in doubt, our answer would be in the negative, as it causes problems for us to accept back software in particular for refund if found to be unsuitable.

Your information provided is gratefully received and will be held on file in our Acorn Technical Support department for future use.

Yours faithfully, Keith Archer.

Terry informs me that there was no View 3 ROM enclosed, but it was certainly worth a try!
