Professional Releases (UK)

A selection of images designed by Dave E from the original cover art which introduce many Acorn Electron World discs

Welcome to the Professional Releases (UK) library for the Acorn Electron. To the left is a navigation bar which allows you to find anything ever professionally released (as long as you know which software publisher it was released by). Summary information is presented on every game, and a number of icons appear to denote downloads that are available on the Acorn Electron World web site and DVD. If a game is known to exist, it will also be present within this section.

You can download all of the tape images ("UEF"s) from the web site completely free. If you are familiar with the games from days of old, these will give you hours of retro gaming enjoyment.

However, in addition to the tape icon, you will often see numerous other icons. If you have purchased a DVD, and you are viewing this page on it, these icons will not redirect you to the DVD page, but will allow you access to huge archives of information and to the famous disc images, which are superior to the tape images in almost every way.

The comprehensive key to the icons, and what they mean, is as follows:

Information Icon
This icon means full playing instructions and game controls are archived for that release. These are present on the DVD, but are not present on the web site
Movie Icon
This icon means a 'vidcap' (approximately 1 minute) can be viewed of this game. 'Vidcaps' give a short review on whether a game is 'worth' downloading and playing. These are present on the both the DVD and the web site
A&B Computing Review Icon
This icon means the release was reviewed by A&B Computing at the time it was released. All A&B Computing reviews have been OCR'd and are present on the DVD, but are not present on the web site
Acorn User Review Icon
This icon means the release was reviewed by Acorn User at the time it was released. All Acorn User reviews have been OCR'd and are present on the DVD, but are not present on the web site
Electron User Review Icon
This icon means the release was reviewed by Electron User at the time it was released. All Electron User reviews have been OCR'd and are present on the DVD, but are not present on the web site
EUG Review Icon
This icon means the release was reviewed by Electron User Group, probably by our webmaster. All EUG reviews are present on the DVD and the web site
Impact Games Review Icon
This icon means the release was reviewed by Impact Games Club, which also offered the games for sale. All Impact Games' reviews are present on the DVD, but are not present on the web site
The Micro User Review Icon
This icon means the release was reviewed by The Micro User. All The Micro User reviews are present on the DVD, but are not present on the web site
Solution Icon
This icon means, mainly for Text Adventures, that one (or more) full solutions are archived for that title. These are present on the DVD, but not present on the web site
Tape Icon
This icon means that the original tape version of the game is available to download. The tapes are available on both the DVD and the web site
ADFS Disc Icon
This icon means an ADFS 1D00 disc version of the game is available, suitable for the Acorn Plus 3, AP3 or AP34. These are present on the DVD, but not present on the web site
DFS Disc Icon
This icon means an DFS E00 disc version of the game is available, suitable for the Acorn Plus 3, AP3 or AP34. These are present on the DVD, but not present on the web site

The Professional Releases (UK) library is now 100% complete. That is, everything that we have been able to find, we have made available with its instructions, user guide, cover art, reviews and screenshots. We have also added its tape images and disc images.

Note that this library is the most complex of the whole site, and has been some ten years in the making. The AEW discs represent a significant improvement over using a tape image ("UEF"). They include menus, additional graphics, full instructions, pertinent reviews, game help and even cheat modes. Copy protection mechanisms present on the original tape version have been disabled; bugs present in the original release (which were later identified and 'patched' through the pages of the 8-bit magazines of the time) are already ironed out.

Disc downloads on the DVD are also available in one or more formats. An ADFS 1D00 disc image is compatible with any Advanced Disc Filing System such as the Acorn Plus 3. A DFS disc image is compatible with the Disc Filing System used by Solidisk, Slogger and ACP/Pres. All AEW disc images have been checked for compatibility with Electron GoMMC too - most of them will work with it! Tape images will not.

The majority of the work done on each AEW disc is down to Dave E but thanks for hacking the more 'difficult' tapes goes to Mr. Spock, the Quazar and Bill Carr. To write the disc images to an original Acorn Electron disc, use the utilities FDC or Omniflop.

For a taster of how superior the DVD version of the site is to the web version, please visit the Featured Games section, where various games have been 'unlocked' for you to enjoy. For more information on the DVD, please click here.
